Al Kasida Staged Reading Series Proudly Presents
Christopher Chen's Into the Numbers

The Al Kasida Staged
Reading Series is Sponsored by
A Play About Iris Chang

Directed by Joanie Schultz

Featuring Brent Barnes, Yosh Hayashi, Erik Kaiko, Devorah Richards, and Jennifer Shin as Iris Chang

In 2004, Iris Chang, famed author of The Rape of Nanking, a chronicle of one of the worst atrocities of the 20th Century, committed suicide at the age of 36. Structured as an interview gone awry, Into the Numbers explores the philosophical and psychological implications of researching genocide, as well as the toll media saturation plays in the process. What begins as a standard lecture and interview soon descends into a surreal nightmare. Ghosts from Chang's research appear and characters shift personas, as the celebrated author tries desperately to find order in the midst of mental chaos.

Al Kasida Staged Reading Series IllustrationIn Arabic, "al kasida" means "the ode." The word is meant to evoke the rich tradition of storytelling and epic poetry in the lands of the Silk Road. Just as written and oral narratives helped convey the cultural and historical realities of antiquity, Al Kasida Staged Reading Series promises to illuminate for Chicago audiences the contemporary realities of communities that are as vast and diverse as they are misunderstood.

To reserve tickets, email boxoffice@srtp.org or call 312-857-1234, ext. 201.
